As artists, we sometimes feel obligated to justify:…

As artists, we sometimes feel obligated to justify: the afro-centricity, the very brownness, (is latino-centricity a word, or can I make it up right now?) of our creative works.

There is an artist who’s work pops up in my feed occasionally. Depictions/paintings of “America”: Flag, Cross, bible, soldier, families full of smiling white faces. He has plainly said.. I don’t draw “other” people because I don’t want to.

My question: Why are we always asked to justify our art when others don’t and won’t.

Why can we not escape the marginalization of the “urban” label if our characters fail the paper bag test?
